DEFENDING champion Serena Williams is through to the second round of the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne.
Williams beat Slovakian-turned-Australian Jarmilla Gajdosova in straight sets in one hour and two minutes in the first match on centre court.
After fighting off a comeback from the 20-year-old in the first set the No.7 seed won 6-3 6-3.
